Dreamy Pear Cut Engagement Rings
The pear cut is quite popular in modern jewelry, but the teardrop shape has a rich history dating back to the late 15th century. Memorably seen on icon Elizabeth Taylor, the pear cut embodies a whimsical look that has been known to look larger than its counterparts of the same carat. The elegant and romantic style also has incredible versatility, and some of our Bario Neal favorites range from bold East-West rings to more minimal solitaire options.

A Brief History
Toward the end of the 15th century, Flemish diamond cutter, Lodewyk van Bercken, invented the scaif; a diamond polishing wheel that enabled diamond cutters to cut facets and polish stones in perfect symmetry. This invention opened the door for many fancy cut styles, and the first pear cut was created by Bercken shortly after. Like the round brilliant cut, the pear cut includes 58 facets, marrying the fundamentals of the round brilliant and elongated marquise cuts beautifully.
All About Pears
Pear cut stones can vary in appearance, so let's discuss; what makes a pear a pear?
- A pear cut can appear in different ratios, resulting in thinner and more elongated shapes, as well as more stout pears. The most popular ratio for a balance proportion being 1-1:50.
- Pear cuts almost exclusively are cut with 58 facets.
- Symmetry is very important in pear cuts in order to achieve the sloping teardrop shape.
- The elongated shape creates the illusion of the stone being bigger than its actual carat size.
- Pear cuts are not just for diamonds, and fancy cuts like the pear can accentuate the vibrance of colored gems.
