A Brief History
The oval cut takes the classic brilliant diamond cut and elongates the shape, resulting in a more dramatic and eyecatching stone. This variation on the brilliant cut dates way back to the 1700s, but wasn’t referred to as an ‘Oval Cut’ until the 1800s. During this time the most famous oval cut diamond, the Koh-I-Noor, said to be mined in India and with an extensive provenance, was gifted to Queen Victoria in Britain. The stone’s name fittingly translates to “Mountain of Light”. Though initially much larger, it is now set in the Queen Mother’s crown at approximately 105 carats, which was fashioned for Queen Elizabeth for the 1937 coronation. You can see it in the Tower of London with the other Crown Jewels. More recently, breath-taking oval diamond rings have been seen on the likes of Lady Gaga, Simone Biles, and Kourtney Kardashian.
